A graduate of Appalachian State University, Matt played for the Mountaineers for the past two seasons after transferring from Tallahassee Community College as a right-handed pitcher. Originally from Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Schaeffer graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School where he was named to All-Area Honorable Mention and All-State Academic teams. In college, Schaeffer has won multiple academic achievements, such as a National Junior College Athletic Association academic student-athlete award as well as numerous appearances on Dean's Lists and Academic Honor Rolls.

At Tallahassee, Schaeffer led the team in wins, saves, and appearances sporting a 4-1 record with a 3.82 ERA. At App State, Schaeffer was an important part of the bullpen staff, with keynote performances against then-No. 4 Virginia and then-No. 24 South Carolina, allowing no runs and just two hits, as well as a career performance against Radford where he struck out 7 over 5 innings of relief without allowing an earned run. Schaeffer adapted a two-slot mix that often kept hitters guessing.

His brother, Chris Schaeffer, played four years at NC State and is now a coach in the Toronto Blue Jays Organization after catching in the system for 4 years. His father, Frank, is a well-known coach throughout the South Florida area having coached current big leaguers Manny Machado, Albert Almora, Nick Castellanos, Mychal Givens, Paco Rodriguez, and Robby Scott as part of the All-American Prospects. He also went on to have a collegiate coaching career with stints as pitching coach at Florida A&M, Alcorn State, and Tallahassee Community College.

Schaeffer earned his Bachelor degree in Communication, with a minor in Leadership Studies. He joins the Lightning this summer and looks provide insight and instruction to the pitching staff.
