Player Spotlight: Geoffrey Greenfader of Georgia Tech

Geoffrey Greenfader has decided to call Boca Raton, FL. his home for 2014 summer baseball season, as he will play for the Boca Raton Lightning in the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League. Greenfader, a sophomore, pitcher from Georgia Tech, is excited take the field with the Lightning and looks forward to “becoming a better baseball player,” he said. The San Juan, P.R, native walked on to the Georgia Tech baseball team in the fall of his freshman year. “I knocked on the coach’s door and asked him if I could try out,” Greenfader said, as he wasn’t even labeled as a preferred walk-on. The coach then agreed to let him tryout for the team. “There was never a doubt in my mind that I could make the team,” he said. Greenfader made the most of his opportunity impressing the coaching staff in the fall. The coaches were impressed with what they saw throughout the fall baseball season, and ultimately decided to give him a roster spot. Georgia Tech was not only a perfect athletic fit for Greenfader, but it was the right choice academically as well. He wanted a “rigorous” academic school that would motivate him, and Georgia Tech fit the mold of his desire. He further explains that the great weather, the school being only three and a half hours away from San Juan through the air, and the “phenomenal” baseball team further provided clarity in his final college decision.

This past summer, Greenfader played for the West Coast Storm in Southern California, where he racked up innings on the mound to prepare him for his sophomore, fall season at Georgia Tech, after his redshirt, freshman year. He said the West Coast Storm kept him in baseball form and was pleased with the experience he received. As for this summer, he is excited to play in the SFCBL for the Lightning. He chose the lightning because a player on last year’s team recommended the Lightning to him, who said the team provides great facilities, training and competition. Greenfader looks forward to getting into a routine and a schedule to strengthen his baseball skills.

He went to St. John’s School in Puerto Rico. He played on and captained the Puerto Rico National Team in the Senior League World Series, where he took his team to play in the Caribbean World Series. In addition, Greenfader was named to the Connie Mack All-Star team in 2012, and recorded an ERA of .46 in the American Congress, which was the lowest in the league.

When he is not on the baseball diamond, or studying in the classroom, he enjoys going to the beach and playing video games such as MLB 13 The Show, NBA 2k14, and FIFA 14.
